The requirement is not determined solely by brand ownership, company nationality, or having a website. Identify the physical locations and the activities conducted there. Manufacturing, processing, packing, and holding can matter even where another company owns the product. Assess each location individually instead of assuming that a supplier's registration covers your whole operation.
- List each location and what happens there.
- Identify whether food is intended for human or animal consumption in the United States.
- Check the applicable definitions and exemptions.
- Establish whether the project is a new filing or maintenance of an existing record.
Exemptions require attention to the definitions
Common examples include farms, restaurants, retail food establishments, qualifying nonprofit food establishments, certain fishing vessels, and facilities regulated exclusively by USDA. A farm mixed-type facility may perform activities outside the farm definition. A commercial food operation does not become a private residence simply because someone lives there. Borderline operations deserve a factual assessment.
Initial registration and confirmation
Prepare facility identification, an acceptable UFI, contacts, food categories, activity types, and the required inspection assurance and certifications. Maintain the record through changes and renewal
Required information generally must be updated within 60 calendar days after a change. When ownership changes, FDA's guidance calls for the former owner's cancellation and the new owner's registration. Closure also requires attention to cancellation. FDA lifecycle guidance.
Renewal is October 1 through December 31 of even-numbered years. The 2026 renewal period runs October 1 through December 31, 2026, and an update is not a renewal. FDA's renewal instructions explain the review and submission process. FDA's 2026 renewal guide.
FDA can suspend registration in qualifying serious-risk circumstances; ordinary filing support should not be represented as a guarantee against enforcement. FDA registration and suspension guidance.
Know what registration does not establish
FDA does not charge a food-facility registration fee or issue a registration certificate. A consultant's fee is payment for private services, not payment for FDA approval. FDA fee and certificate explanation.
